Frequently asked questions
Who can register to vote in Texas?
To register to vote in Texas you must:
- Be a U.S citizen
- Be a resident of Texas and your election district
- Be at least 18 years old on the day of the next election
- Not convicted of a felony (or, if so, have had your civil rights restored)
- Not judged mentally incompetent in a court of law
Can I register to vote on Election Day?
Texas does not offer same-day voter registration, so be sure to submit your voter registration before the deadline.
What are the voter registration deadlines?
To submit your voter registration by mail, your registration must be received by October 7. Texas does not offer online voter registration.
What do I need to bring to vote?
All citizens wishing to vote must be on the official list of registered voters. Voters may use one of seven forms of photo ID to cast their ballot. IDs may be expired up to four years, and people who are 70 years of age or older may use an expired ID.
Acceptable forms of ID are:
- Driver's license
- Texas Election Identification Certificate (EIC)
- Texas Personal Identification Card issued by DPS
- Texas license to carry a handgun issued by DPS
- US military identification card containing the person’s photograph
- US citizenship certificate containing the person’s photograph
- US passport (book or card)
A student ID is not a form of valid voter ID. Registered voters without photo ID have other options.
