Who can register to vote in South Dakota?

To register to vote in South Dakota you must:

  • Be a U.S. citizen
  • Be a resident of South Dakota
  • Be at least 18 years old on the day of the next election
  • Not in prison for a felony (or, if so, have had your civil rights restored)
  • Not judged mentally incompetent in a court of law

Can I register to vote on Election Day?

South Dakota does not offer same-day voter registration, so be sure to submit your voter registration before the deadline.

  • To submit your voter registration by mail, your registration must be received by October 21.

What do I need to bring to vote?

All voters who appear at a polling place must show proof of identification. Approved forms of photo identification include:

  • South Dakota driver's license or nondriver ID card
  • U.S. government photo ID (passport is acceptable)
  • U.S. Armed Forces ID
  • Current student photo identification card from a South Dakota high school or South Dakota accredited institution of higher education
  • Tribal photo ID
