Who can register to vote in Rhode Island?
To register to vote in Rhode Island you must:
- Be a U.S. citizen for at least one month before the election
- Be a resident of Rhode Island and your election district
- Be at least 18 years old on the day of the next election
- Not convicted of a felony (or, if so, have had your civil rights restored)
- Not judged mentally incompetent in a court of law
Can I register to vote on Election Day?
Yes! Rhode Island offers same-day voter registration. Visit a polling location on Election Day, November 5, to register. In this case, you will only be able to vote for President and Vice President. You will not be able to vote in any state, local, or other federal races.
What are the voter registration deadlines?
- To submit your voter registration by mail or online, your registration must be received by October 6.
- If requesting a mail-in ballot, your application must be received by October 15.

What do I need to bring to vote?
Rhode Island state law requires voters to present a valid photo ID at the polling place before being allowed to vote.
The following is a list of photo IDs you can show at the polling place. The ID cannot have expired more than 6 months before the election:
- RI driver's license/permit
- US passport
- ID card issued by any federally recognized tribal government
- ID card issued by an educational institution in the United States
- US military identification card
- ID card issued by the US government or State of Rhode Island (RIPTA bus pass, etc.)
- Government issued medical card
- RI Voter ID card
Voters without ID may be able to vote provisionally.
