Who can register to vote in Massachusetts?
To register to vote in Massachusetts you must:
- Be a U.S. citizen for at least one month before the next election
- Be a resident of Massachusetts
- Be at least 18 years old on the day of the next election
- Not convicted of a felony (or, if so, have had your civil rights restored)
- Not judged mentally incompetent in a court of law
Can I register to vote on Election Day?
Massachusetts does not offer same-day voter registration, so be sure to submit your voter registration before the deadline.
What are the voter registration deadlines?
To submit your voter registration by mail or online, your registration must be received by October 26.
What do I need to bring to vote?
You may need to show identification when you check-in at your polling place if:
- You are voting for the first time in Massachusetts
- You're on the inactive voter list
- You're casting a provisional or challenged ballot
Identification needs to show your name and the address where you are registered to vote.
Examples of acceptable identification are:
- A driver's license
- A state ID card
- A recent utility bill
- A rent receipt or lease
- A copy of a voter registration affidavit
- A letter from a school dormitory or housing office
- Any other printed identification which contains your name and address
Voters without ID may be able to vote provisionally.
