Who can register to vote in Illinois?

To register to vote in Illinois, you must:

  • Be a U.S. citizen
  • Live in Illionis and your election district for at least 30 days before the next election
  • Be at least 18 years old on Election Day
  • Not have been released from prison, jail, or a halfway house after completing your term of incarceration for any felony conviction
  • Not have been deemed mentally incompetent to vote

Can I register to vote on Election Day?

Yes! Illinois offers a registration grace period from October 9, to Election Day, November 5. During the grace period, you can register in person at designated sites.

What are the voter registration deadlines?

  • To submit your voter registration by mail, your registration must be postmarked by October 8.
  • To submit your voter registration online, your registration must be received by October 20.
  • Illinois also offers in-person voter registration from October 9, to Election Day, November 5, at designated sites.

What do I need to bring to vote?

If you are already registered at your current address, you do not need to provide an ID.

If you are registering in person, you must provide two forms of ID with at least one showing your current address. Valid forms of ID include:

  • Current and valid photo ID (driver’s license, state ID, military ID, passport, etc.) 
  • Utility bill, bank statement, paycheck, or government check
  • Other government document that shows your name and address 
  • College or university ID and a copy of your contract/lease or postmarked mail delivered to your current address 

A voter who needs ID, but who cannot present ID, may cast a provisional ballot.
