If I Was a Man

September 11, 2024

. . . I'd be the man

Happy day after the big debate! Last night we saw there’s one candidate who has a clear vision for the future prosperity of America — and the other promises nothing more than hate and division. And we’re not the only ones who recognized this because last night Taylor Swift herself endorsed Kamala Harris!

“I’m voting for Kamala Harris because she fights for the rights and causes I believe need a warrior to champion them,” part of Taylor’s statement said. “I think she is a steady-handed, gifted leader and I believe we can accomplish so much more in this country if we are led by calm and not chaos.” Read Taylor’s full Instagram post here and S4K’s official statement here.

We’re highlighting four different types of volunteer opportunities this week for people who may prefer to help out from the comfort of their homes:

  • We’re happy and free this Saturday: Big news! Swifties For Kamala is partnering with Voters of Tomorrow to host a phone bank THIS Saturday, Sept. 14 from 6 - 8 pm ET, focusing on unregistered students in Wisconsin and Georgia! Sign up and get all the details here.
  • Want to see you pick up your phone: Sign up to phone bank with the Grassroots Democrats HQ. They’re hosting one virtual phone bank each day: Mondays through Fridays from 6 - 8 pm and Saturdays and Sundays from 10 am - 12 pm (all times listed in ET). A full training will be provided at the start of each Zoom call.
  • I made up my mind, I'm better off [text banking] alone: Sign up to attend a text banking training with the California Democratic Party on Thursday, Sept. 19 or Thursday, Sept. 26 from 3 - 4:30 pm PT. Once trained, you'll be able to send texts any time between 9 am to 9 pm in your time zone! Note: Although hosted by the California Democratic Party, texts will be sent to voters in key swing states.
  • Writing letters addressed to [voters]: Prefer a slower paced, independent activity? Write letters to voters in battleground states with Swing Left! For all information on how to get started, click here.

Last night we were treated to a master class in grace, passion, morality and clarity from Kamala Harris. While on the debate stage, the Vice President presented her plans to help the American people thrive. Her policy goals for the economy, reproductive rights, and protecting democracy were researched and compassionate. Former President Trump, on the other hand, was washed up and ranting about the same old bitter things. Over the course of two hours, he managed to spew transphobic, racist, and xenophobic rhetoric. In short, Kamala showed us incredible things last night! If you didn’t get a chance to watch the debate, you can read more about it here.

In other news, earlier this week the New York Times released their newest national poll showing the race is neck and neck. One of the most interesting results of the poll: About 9/10 people said they’d made up their mind on Trump, but that number was only 7/10 for Vice President Harris. That means that about 3 of every 10 people are still looking to learn more about Kamala, and that’s where we come in!

Time is running out, so we’ve got to speak now. If everyone makes it their mission to talk to a few people this week about Vice President Harris and what she stands for (even if it’s just forwarding this email or texting someone about Taylor’s endorsement), we can make a huge difference!

We’re back with another Project 2025 issue that is not as commonly talked about, but still important to your rights — the plan for media. While many may not feel they fall into this affected category directly, the plan's limitations will vastly affect our access to information from trusted sources. Let’s unpack what Project 2025 has in store.

For starters, they will defund the Center for Public Broadcasting (CFB), a plan they call “good policy and good politics” (pg.246). This impacts stations like NPR, which serves about 21 million listeners a week, and other outlets like PBS. This would impact not only news but also fan favorites like NPR’s Tiny Desk, which Taylor appeared on in 2019.

Project 2025 also plans to strip NPR and Pacifica Radio of their noncommercial education station status, which will make them forfeit their spots on the lower end of the frequency (pg. 247). Their plan also aims to limit the viewpoints that disagree with them — so that means it’s up to us to ensure we have free and fair access to information and can stay informed about our futures.

As we devastatingly saw last week, the back-to-school season unfortunately brings back the frequency of school shootings. While at an event in New Hampshire, Kamala Harris reminded the crowd that gun violence is a key issue on the ballot in November. She spoke directly about the school shooting at Apalachee High School in Georgia, saying, “This is just a senseless tragedy on top of so many senseless tragedies, and it’s just outrageous that every day in our country, in the United States of America, that parents have to send their children to school worried about whether or not their child will come home alive. It’s senseless.” Some of her past actions on gun safety include:

  • Leading the first-ever Office of Gun Violence Prevention at the White House
  • Championing the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act (BSCA), which was the first major gun safety law to pass in the U.S. in almost 30 years
  • Leading the fight as California Attorney General to pass a Red Flag law, making California the third state with one

Harris emphasized while in New Hampshire, “We’ve got to stop it, and we have to end this epidemic of gun violence in our country once and for all. You know it doesn’t have to be this way.”

California residents — it’s time to stop standing on the sidelines wishing for Democratic representatives! Multiple Republican-held districts in CA are beingreported as toss-ups and can be flipped blue… but only if you get out and vote!
